Transversal Competencies and their Assessment: Perspectives from the Asia-Pacific

In a recent report by UNESCO recognises the relevance of what are described as “transversal competencies”[link]. These are skills or competencies that the 21st Century world demands and as defined in the report include critical and innovative thinking, interpersonal skills, intrapersonal skills, media and information literacy and global citizenship. The report highlights the lack of knowledge about the transversal competencies as a challenge – how they develop, how they may be taught through or in conjunction with current curricula and how assessment might enhance their teaching and learning.
